Introduction

This course teaches the basics of podcasting and offers tips and advice for producing a high-quality podcast.

Creating a podcast may seem intimidating at first, but in its simplest form a podcast is just recorded bits of audio — or sound bites — pieced together to tell a story. It can also include elements that make a podcast unique and engaging, like an introductory jingle or a voiceover to transition between topics.

To demonstrate, we created a five-minute podcast on “How to Make a Podcast,” which features an interview with Camilla Byk, the founder of Podium.me, a News Decoder media partner that specializes in youth audio production.

Each year, News Decoder and Podium produce a podcast series that leverages the audio expertise of Podium’s sound editors and News Decoder student reporters to produce engaging news stories from a young and fresh perspective. Throughout this course, we’ll reference previous episodes from the News Decoder Podcast to showcase examples of the tips and techniques taught in this course.

Before diving into these modules, let’s hear from Camilla, who answers the following questions:

  1. Why do a podcast?
  2. How should I prepare for an interview?
  3. What do I need to make a 3-5 minute podcast?
  4. Who should I talk to?
  5. How can I record high quality audio if I don’t have access to a studio?

Now that you’ve listened to this overview, you’re ready to dive into the details of preparing, interviewing, recording, transcribing and scripting for a podcast.

By the end of this course, you will understand:

  • Why podcasts are a good storytelling medium and how to get started
  • Common podcast formats
  • How to conduct interviews and capture audio for podcasts
  • How to transcribe interviews, create podcast scripts and edit audio

This course takes about 30 minutes to complete. Alright, let’s get started!
