About News Decoder
News Decoder is a global educational news service for young people. We partner with schools around the world to teach media literacy and journalistic skills that broaden students’ knowledge of global issues. Our educational services include workshops, global webinars, editing, content publication and eLearning courses.
News Decoder is a small organization with outsize reach, impact and ambitions. We offer a transformative educational experience that helps students develop critical skills and behaviors that are distinct from what they learn in the classroom. We are growing rapidly on a number of fronts: school partnerships, interest from schools, content on our site and web traffic.
News Decoder is a not-for-profit registered and headquartered in Paris, France, but is a virtual and global platform. We are looking for an intern to join our team for a four to 12-month term, starting in the Fall of 2020.
A News Decoder intern supports the News Decoder team in a variety of ways, and the challenges can change on a dime — writing stories, developing our annual podcast series, conducting research, building our audience on social media and helping with administrative tasks. Given the diversity of the role, some of the key qualities we look for in interns are intellectual curiosity, flexibility, strong interpersonal skills and a “can do” attitude.
The successful candidate will have the following key qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma
- Summer work or volunteer experience at a company, school or non-profit
- Experience writing articles a plus
- Experience producing audio and video content a plus
- Social media savvy a plus
- Native English communication skills, both written and verbal
- Strong interpersonal skills
- A courteous manner
- Intellectually curious
- A self-starter
- A “can do” attitude and willingness to tackle a range of responsibilities
News Decoder supports virtual work arrangements and welcomes applications from candidates outside of France. If the candidate is interested in working from our Paris office, he or she must be eligible to work legally in France. No French is required for this position.
Please send a cover letter and resume to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please note that we are not able to contact everyone who applies. You can expect to hear from us if we are interested in scheduling an interview.
Please note that the successful candidate must be willing to work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
“There’s always something new going on, and there’s never a moment of boredom. I get to work on different projects week to week, and this has given me so much insight into the journalism, business, and legal aspects of running an online publication and educational resource. In my first two weeks, I’ve written for the News Decoder blog, I’ve worked on privacy matters and a whole bunch more.” – Angela Gu, a current News Decoder intern
“From the get-go I was included in all the behind-the-scenes at News Decoder and truly felt as if I was part of the team. Nelson, Savannah and Lauren encouraged me to ask questions, make suggestions and be involved in the decision-making. I wrote articles, took part in webinars and helped organize the Storytelling contest. Though I often had to step out of my comfort zone, I know I’m the better for it.” — Dylan Carlson Sirvent, a current News Decoder intern
