Trilingual, passionate about sustainable development and an expert in information technology, Maryam Touimi Benjelloun is the person to help News-Decoder re-launch its online platform in time for the coming academic year.

Benjelloun started her summer internship at News-Decoder this week and over the next three months will oversee general IT support and lead the re-launch of a new interactive website. No easy task for an intern, but she can handle it.

A Moroccan national, Benjelloun grew up in the coastal city of Casablanca where she received an International Baccalaureate diploma from the Casablanca American School before attending the University of Miami in the United States to pursue a medical degree.

Her international background took her across the Atlantic to the United States — a natural progression for an experienced Model United Nations delegate — but a life-long hobby left her questioning her academic career.

Her impact on campus has been felt across the school community.

A self-taught coder, Benjelloun soon realized that her passion was for IT, not medicine, and switched her focus to computer science. She packed up, left Miami and arrived in Paris to pursue a degree in Management Information Systems at the American University of Paris (AUP).

Benjelloun will enter her final year of undergraduate study at AUP this autumn. She has already made her mark on university life. The student government awarded her “The Highest Impact” prize for 2017-18 for her work leading the environmental club, AUP Green. Under her leadership, five water fountains were installed across campus to reduce plastic waste.

News-Decoder is a nascent organization but in its short lifespan has been able to accomplish much thanks to dynamic, hard-working risk takers who’ve pitched in — including interns each summer since 2015.

We’re delighted that Benjelloun has joined the team.

Savannah JenkinsĀ joined News-Decoder in January to help expand its network of schools to more countries and to support its partners. She works closely with student ambassadors to raise News-Decoder’s profile on campus and to help theĀ  representatives fulfill their leadership responsibilities. A 2017 graduate of the American University of Paris, she has been accepted into the U.S. Peace Corps and will be starting a two-year stint in Senegal in early 2019.
